CHIP, should be a familiar name to our regular readers. He has been in the "available" column since April, after being rescued from a NJ Shelter by Brooks Parrott. Now CHIP is trying his best to adapt to family life in the home of Michael & Maritza Siegel of Hillsdale, NJ. Michael & Maritza both had several weeks of summer vacation and wanting to once again share their hears and homes with a Springer, decided they were ready for the challenges that lay ahead with this affable young male. We shall eagerly await the news of his progress!!
A Springer who was adopted last January and who we never included in this adoptive section, first because we were waiting for the details and info and then because we plain forgot!! This very special boy, RUSTY, was adopted by Larry and Peggy Minarik of Roscoe, NY, thanks to the efforts of Holly Blodgett and her family in Binghamton. The Minarik's wrote to tell us thatRUSTY adapted very quickly to his new home, just walked in and took over, appointed himself as watch dog, loves to play ball with Larry, but can't decide if he should sleep on the sofa with Larry or in the recliner with Peggy. Oh my, such tough decisions! We are just delighted to know yet another Springer has a special family to love and be loved by!!
Lou & Zita Casagrande adopted DANNY BOY, in March of 1990, after he was rescued by Carrie Maynard who was then living in NJ and fostered for a mere 24 hours, by Bobbie Altchek. Almost 2 years later they agreed to foster LIZZIE, and when months went by and the older LIZZIE, with numerous health,. problems did not get a home, they officially adopted her too. If DANNY BOY could talk, they say he would say "life is sure good here!"
Another dog who would say "I'm the luckiest dog alive!" is SHELBY,who was adopted by Grace & Doug Lessing on January 15, 1994. SHELBY,a very energetic youngster Was a stray, who found himself in the Babylon Shelter and was fostered by Barbara & Ron Chuvales. Grade & Doug had been making numerous phone calls virtually across America, when they finally reached Julie & Alex Merriman in Rhode Island, who not only advised them to adopt, but told them of the ESSCLI Rescue Program and Marge, who lived only minutes from their home ' Now we have only two questions for SHELBY:Are you still friends with the harbor seal 'and do you still have an affinity for toilet paper and garbage????.
Peter & Shelly Kaplan adopted CHARLIE in September 1991 and renamed himOLIVER WENDELL DAWG--KING OF NEW YORK!! They said in their questionnaire that sometimes he is not politically correct in his decisions about people--BUT WE LOVE THIS DOG!! I hope it is not politically incorrect to call him OLIVER for short. OLIVER'S story was that he was a much loved family pet who enjoyed being with the older child in the home, but when a second child was born, OLIVER was not that happy. OLIVER joined the Kaplan's, probably the first Springer we placed in a New York City apartment, and adjusted well. His first family thought about getting a golden retriever, but then decided they really wanted a Springer, called back and asked, was it possible to find a rescue Springer who would like both the older Child and the toddler? Yes it was and they have had JAMIE since October 1991.
Kathleen & Garrett Smith of Catawissa, PA, are a 4 Springer family. They started with SPREE & GOLLY as pups. FARLEY, yet another unwanted Springer, joined their family in May 1993. More than a year later OREY,joined the gang. Kathleen had called one summer afternoon to say that they were ready to adopt the 4th Springer, but this time they would really like to be quite specific, they wanted a very young, black and white female. After talking about how long it might take for such a dog to come into the program, Marge and Kathleen hung up both believing it would be weeks, even months before they would talk again. not so, within two hours a tearful, distraught lady called, she had a black and white female Springer who she had adopted from down south and she absolutely could not keep. Now you know the rest of the story!! FARLEY loves his Sunday morning rides for the newspaper with his dad and adores the freedom afforded by the 135 acre isolated farm he now calls home. OREY meanwhile prefers fishing in the family pond! !
CHARLIE was adopted on July 3, 1993 by Robin & Susan Neiqbold of Sea Cliff, NY, then his owner had to give him up because of an upcoming move to Japan, In answering the questionnaire, Robin & Susan wrote thatCHARLIE loves to sleep on his "sister" Diedre's bed and when he's not sleeping he prefers a window seat so he can watch the birds.
Gail Schuljan and Scott Gillis became a 3 Springer Family in January of 1994 when they officially adopted FAGAN, after fostering him for several months. FAGAN came to Long Island from Vermont, where he had been in two homes before we were contacted. He began life tied to a dog house on a short chain, was adopted by a second couple at age 2, who one year later found themselves unable to care for him as their children were having numerous medical problems, including an upcoming kidney transplant. So in the summer of 1993, he was transported by Barbara & Dick Shum who met the new adoptive home, but alas, FAGAN was not the dog for an active home with young children. Next stop, Don Snyder & Tracey Monahan's kennel situation and. again, FAGAN was not meant to be crated & kenneled. So a final chance, foster care with Scott, Gail and their 2 Springers, CHARLIE & SALLY. Slowly but surely FAGAN adjusted and by all means the family adjusted to him. They say that FAGAN definitely lives up to his name, "a thief ", and still won't tell which Springer got the cantaloupe off the counter and ate THE WHOLE THING!!!
In the late Spring of 1993, a young sweet black and white male was abandoned by his owner who tied him to a fence at the Randolph Animal Shelter. Marilyn Perrie contacted us and he was then fostered by Brooks Parrott for several months until the Orczyk Family of Huntington Bay, NY, came along. -- October 10, 1993 was surely a very special day for TIMOTHY, he became CURIOUS GEORGE ORCZYK! Now he loves to go for bagels and play golf with his Dad, Stan. He jogs with his Mom, Lynn, and sister, Karen and enjoys a very special relationship with another sister, Pam. From the entire Orczylc Family come the words, "WE ADORE YOU CURIOUS GEORGE! LADY MORGAN came to us from the ASPCA in NYC with a very serious bladder/kidney infection in the summer of 1992, For a number of reasons, her first adoptive home couldn't keep her and she spent many weeks in the foster care of Don Snyder until Heather & Jeff Morgan of West Redding adopted her in December of 1992. With true dedication, commitment, love, care, and a lot of vet bills, they transformed this poor waif into a gorgeous, bright, affectionate family member. LADY MORGAN and her brother, CHUCK, are like "bookends " according to Heather & Jeff. They sit, stand, walk, and lie down in exactly the same way and Heather & Jeff credit CHUCKfor helping the very troubled "little doggie they adopted to overcome her fears and problems and become the magnificent gal she is today.
BILLY-was at least 11 years old when he found himself in the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in September of 1994. Fostered for months by Sharon Klosterman, BILLY was chosen by David, Bridget, Shea, Amelia and William Bromirskiof Cambridge, NY to share their home on December l2, 1994. Bridget said that BILLY loves the cows in the field next door and is a real protector of the kids in a quiet sweet way.
Steve Pavony of New York City chose KAMI, a five year old liver & white gal, whom the owners no longer wanted. KAMI is now learning about the sounds and sights of city life, but most of all is learning what it means to be truly wanted & loved! We are looking forward to an update on his adjustment from Steve In the near future and are wondering if any of our adoptive Springers living in New York City have had the pleasure of meeting each other during their strolls in their neighborhood parks.
Paul & Kathy Fusco and their two children, Corey and Alex, were ready to adopt SAM more than a month before he actually joined them. SAM'Soriginal owner wanted to give him up, the Fuscols were willing to drive to Kingston from their Bennington, VT home and then on the morning they were to go, the owner changed her mind. One month later the woman's husband called Marge and informed her that SAM was being temporarily boarded and if we didn't pick him up within 2-3 days he would be put in a local shelter. A quick call to Cheryl Petras and SAM was picked up and joined the Fusco Family where he is learning to play with toys, and finding out the joys of long romps and quiet times with rawhides. Though quite deprived for the first year of his life, SAM will celebrate his first birthday this month in a SPRINGER HOME, a home filled with love and care!
LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE was found running loose in the Corona section of Queens by a dog lover named Carla. Carla called us after she had taken this very young black and white female to the vet, had her spayed, heart worm tested and all shots. Ginny Titterton picked her up and a Long Island family who wanted an older female tried, but after two days knew for sure that they weren't the right home for this highly energetic youngster. So it was foster care for LADY MISSY, as she was called by Carla, Ginny and Joanne Hass, all of whom made it possible for Paul and Terry Welch of Raymond, NH to find that special Springer to join their home. The Welch Family was no stranger to the concept of rescue, having owned 2 rescued pointers, and also having rescued horses, goats and cats. Named LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE, ANNIE for short, by the Welchs, our little orphan is now swimming in the pond, though sometimes at the most inopportune times, learning to stay out of the way of the equines, making friends with the felines and still trying to figure out the goats and most of all learning how to become a beloved family member.
MAX originally came to us just about a year ago from a CT Shelter, where he was picked up by Barbara & Kevin Czarzasty and then fostered by Cheryl Petras. For about 10 months he lived with a family in Williamstown, MA, who recently called Cheryl to say they no longer could care for him. Cheryl took him back into foster care to determine if any of their complaints were valid and she quickly determined they weren't. Now MAX is enjoying the good life with Buzz and Elizabeth Cole at their MISTY MOUNTAIN LODGE in Wilmington, VT where he will be the official guest greeter, I'm sure.

MAXWELL's owner brought him to a vet to be euthanized after a dog fight. The breeder had been contacted for help and their solution vas put him down. The vet could see no reason for destroying this handsome, friendly boy and contacted us. Karyl Schuldt picked him up and he was being boarded/fostered at her kennel, where he did not appear to be dog aggressive, except over food. Now MAXWELL has joined Kerinne Ryan and her two sons in New York City. Kerrinne called just this morning to say he is wonderful, a typical male Springer - who can run in the park with other dogs, who is making many new friends in a neighborhood of dog lovers, and now needs to just develop the trust that this is his home for life!!
DILLON and Diane Richardson were featured in an article in the June '96 issue of Dog Fancy. Diane and her husband, Alvin, are members of ESSCLI- DILLON was a mere 6 month old pup, blind since birth, when she found herself in a NJ Shelter and was the very fortunate one to be chosen by Diane &Alvin. Diarle heard about our Club and Rescue Program after she adopted the adorably sweet DILLON, who leads a very normal life despite her handicap, and has been a member ever since, receiving and enjoying our Newsletter.
Really enjoyed a letter and great photos for the Rescue Family Album from Joanne, Gene & Gregory Bulmer of Raritan, NJ. VARSHA was a mere 8 week-old pup, whom her original owners bought on a Friday and were desperate to give up by Monday. Joanne's parents had adopted ROSEY from our Program a couple of months before and Joanne & Gene had volunteered to help in any way they could. The plan was for them to forget VARSHA for that summer, but they very quickly fell in love with the adorable pup and she officially became a Bulmer. VARSHA shares her home with VALIENT, another Springer, CLAY & ZEE, two kitties and now the newest family member, Gregory, a two footed baby!
DUFFY, a senior citizen, was originally fostered by Bobbie Altchek after his owner had died. This owner had adopted him from a shelter previously- .Bobbie's daughter, Melissa Greenblatt of Portland, Maine was on Long Island and fell in love with the then about 8 year old regal boy and brought him home to Portland in the summer of 1993. Orly and Dennis Biggie, friends of the Greenblatts often dog sat for DUFFY, and therefore when Melissa had her first child and could no longer care for DUFFY, he moved to South Portland, where the Biggies say the thing he enjoys the most is long snoozes!!

SIR CROCKETT was living in his second home, having been adopted by a family whose young son used to hunt -with him when his first owner, who had bought him from a breeder, moved away and couldn't take him. Since SIR CROCKETT could not perform without training and the young man did not wish to try, the Springer was put in an out door run, fed and ignored, This, after being a house dog in his first home. Thankfully, his Mom heard about our program and contacted us and now the sweet, healthy young male is neutered and is sharing the home of Stan & Gail Swiderski. SIR CROCKETT quickly adjusted to sharing his new home with DAKOTA & MONTANA, the other two springers in the Swiderski home and sent a message to Rescue, THANKS YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME TO ONCE AGAIN LIVE IN A HOME--TO LOVE & BE LOVED. (He also wants to thank Edna Randolph for taking him in for a few days to begin his recovery from the neutering surgery!)
EVIE, was surrendered to Barbara, Dick & Josh Shum in deplorable condition, almost too weak to stand, at the age of 16 weeks.
Tender loving care, and good food quickly rejuvenated her, but then a trip to the Granville Vet-Hospital and Dr. Jeff Meyer, resulted in the discovery of a grapefruit sized mass on one kidney. Surgery was quickly scheduled and thanks to the skill and caring of Dr. Meyer and his staff, little EVIE, was soon back home with the Shams. Test results indicated that her remaining kidney was working beautifully and on she went to join COTEE and the Oppenheimer Family in New Jersey. Ellen tells us both pups are doing wonderfully, are totally "delicious", love each other and are loved by Andrew, Adam, husband Bill and of course herself!
Karen & Joe Markiewicz were told of our Rescue Program by the League For Animal Protection, and were patiently waiting for that special Springer to join their home. ROCKY, found himself in Center For Animal Control in Brooklyn, having been turned in there by his family who no longer could care for him. Howard Hass bailed him out and took him for initial Care at the Wet Port with Dr. Weinstein. ROCKY's skin was HORRIBLE, but thankfully it -was not mange and off he went to be fostered by Ginny Titterton. It was our intention to provide additional medical care for ROCKY, but Karenwas most anxious to see him and once she saw him, she knew this was that special boy who needed her love, her care, and would share her and her husband Joe's lives for many years to come.
Ed Krawczyk of Bennington, VT did adopt MOLLY as we anticipated last month. This sweet young female had been purchased from Puppy Barn in Windsor, NJ, less than 2 years ago. Mom never really wanted her but a teenage daughter insisted and then lost interest in her, so poor MOLLY spent much of her time in a crate and never got enough exercise. Ed had contacted Cheryl Petras several months earlier looking for just such a sweet girl to share his life withand was just thrilled to hear that MOLLY was soon to travel to VT and be in Cheryl's care. Now Ed and MOLLY are virtually inseparable and yet another Springer is receiving all the love, care and attention they all so richly deserve.
Ginny Titterton and her 2 sons, Brian and Mlchael have fostered many dogs and Ginny was giving serious consideration to keeping one, when along came PRE, a four year old black and white gal whose owner was to be married soon and would be moving and unable to keep her. Now PRE is sharing all the love and attention with her brother WINSTON, that this wonderful family has to give to their Springers. (And besides Ginny has assured us , we haven'tlost a foster family, just gained another adoptive home, for one very sweet Springer.)
Anne Hoekstra of Saugerties was visiting in the Mohegan Lake area when she heard about our Rescue Program. She immediately went to visit Bob January who was fostering MAGGIE. It was love at first sight, a quick call to Marge and Anne left Mohegan Lake with her new companion. We are sure that the sweet, lovable MAGGIE will thoroughly enjoy her new home and that Anne will once again enjoy the companionship only a four footed furry friend, and especially a Springer can provide!
Pam and Bob Corey of Danby, VT heard about our rescue efforts from Dick Shum with whom Bob works. So of course when Dick, Barbara & Josh, opened their home to yet another foster dog, this time 9 month old SAMANTHA, Dick told Bob and the telephone calls between Pam and Barbara began. SAMMIE is a very active pup and had a very loving and caring home who sadly due to illness could no longer care for her. Were the Corey's ready, was their Cocker ready, was this the right Springer. A visit answered all the questions, yes SAMMIE was to be the newest family member. (Bob likes to garden, is SAMMIE going to help him????)
Linda Crossan and her family of North Massapequa had lost their beloved companion a few months ago. They had met Ginny Titterton and her Springers, WINSTON& PRE and had agreed a Springer was in their future. And the future came more quickly than anyone anticipated in the form of GINGER, an adorable pup, rescued from the Brooklyn Center For Animal Control by Howard Hass. After spending a couple of weeks with Howard, Joanne, Jennye, and their Springers JUSTIE & DAPHNE, everyone was sure that GINGER would be very happy with a family with children of her very own. Being as GINGER was adopted only 3 hours ago, we'll have to save the details till later.
